Minster Group awarded for supporting Armed Forces Community

We’ve received a silver award for supporting the Armed Forces community in the workplace

Minster Group has achieved an MoD Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award from the Armed Forces Covenant. This means that we have been recognised as a business that supports the Armed Forces community in the world of work.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve, or who have served, in the Armed Forces, are treated fairly.

As a company based in “Bomber County” that works closely with the Ministry of Defence, we’re dedicated to doing what we can to support the armed forces community. We’re very proud to have been given this award and we hope it will inspire other businesses in the area to treat armed forces personnel with the same level of respect.

The Employer Recognition Scheme rewards employers like us who support Defence People and encourage others to do the same.  The scheme has Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards for organisations that pledge, show or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces Community.

Employing ex-service personnel

To achieve the Silver Award, we met the requirements of having signed the Armed Forces Covenant and employing at least one member of the Armed Forces community. We also support staff through their Reserve or Cadet Force Adult Volunteer training responsibilities.

One of our employees, James Allibone is a former paratrooper who joined our team three years ago. Managing Director, Bruce Spencer-Knott, said:

“James came to Minster shortly after leaving the Armed Forces and he’s a brilliant addition to our team. He approached us after spending some time working with another construction firm. He wanted to progress his career within a more professional environment and is now a leader of the team. He’s a real asset.

“We know how important it is to look after service personnel when they return from active duty and we believe that employing ex-Forces personnel is great for business. They have a variety of transferable skills and qualities to offer the civilian workplace, developed throughout their military careers. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into any sector and we’re proud to be recognised for the support we offer them.”

Bruce Spencer-Knott, MD of Minster Group

We are just one of 23 public and private sector organisations in the East Midlands to be recognised and earn the Silver Award.

Speaking about the awards, Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Johnny Mercer, said:

“We’re working with businesses to help them further understand the huge value that veterans, reservists and military spouses can bring to their organisations. Veterans make a huge contribution to businesses across the country. It’s fantastic to see so many organisations recognised for their support.”

We often work on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council, which has also won an award for its participation in the scheme. Both us and the County Council will attend a formal presentation evening this month to be officially presented with our awards.
